“Who is the man and who is the woman of today? The reason I wanted to show my men’s and women’s collections together today is because men and women are equally powerful. It doesn’t have anything to do with gender, it’s that their power comes from a different type of confidence, both from their sensual exuberance and their minds.”
- Donatella Versace -

Versace has always been synonymous with sensuality and self-confidence, freedom of expression and the sense of belonging: for Fall-Winter 2020, Donatella Versace continues this cultural conversation by presenting for the first time the women’s and men’s collections on the same runway in a celebration of equality and inclusivity.

Never afraid to express a strong point of view, the collection is for those who do not dress to please everybody. A new concept of sensuality, almost restrained, sketched and never shouted, is epitomized in the slashes that characterize both women’s dresses and men’s tailored suits.

Jewelry-style rings are engraved with Versace’s iconic Greek Key pattern and are used to hold the slashes together. Structured or bonded fabrics are doubled to give a firm shape to dresses, skirts and jackets because there’s power and confidence even in the silhouettes. Arching domed skirts, nipped-in waists and super-strength shoulders highlight the “centres of power” of the Versace tribe: flamboyant and unapologetic in its expression.

In menswear, the clothes channel strength and portray bold hypermasculinity. The shoulders are broad, and the waist is cinched. Sports references inform the collection and appear on head-to-toe tracksuits and netting-backed nylon separates. Here, the slashes add character by revealing sports-inspired netting beneath for a modern rework of a universally recognised brand code. A new sneaker, the Trigreca grounds the looks with utilitarian edge.

Prints focus on the V Barrocco that is distorted, deconstructed, enlarged and shrunk. It’s splashed across men’s tailoring, statement separates and women’s dresses and it becomes a reflection on today’s reality. It is also echoed in the tracklist, in which sounds are deformed, dissonant and not-armonic. The same V commands attention as a sculpture at the show space, a constant reminder of the brand’s unmistakable iconography.

The finale is a sequence of eveningwear. Graphic lines, accented shoulders and the Versace’s infamous metal-mesh drape over the body and is used to create short sculptural dresses. An instarsia finish composed of metal mesh and crystal mesh is used to weave the fabrics together for a show-stopping, red-carpet-worthy look.

VERSACE SPRING SUMMER 2020 WOMEN’S COLLECTION – MILAN FASHION WEEK

Versace Fashion Show SS 2020 Milan

On the occasion of the Spring-Summer 2020 collection, Donatella Versace pays tribute to a iconic moment in which fashion and culture acted as catalysts for technological progress. There experimentation with new sartorial and fabric processing techniques has always been part of DNA of the Versace fashion shows.

Twenty years ago, this spirit of innovation moved from Milan to one of the most important red carpet in Hollywood, up to Silicon Valley. The dress Jungle Print made its debut on the runway of the Spring-Summer 2000 collection e later on several red carpets. At the 2000 Grammy Awards, Jennifer Lopez pulled up of himself the attention of the whole world when he wore this unique dress.

Millions of people went up internet to see Jennifer, making that search the biggest Google had experienced until then. However, what people were looking for – an image of the star and of the dress – did not appear in the results of the research and it was thus that a habit generated such a frenzy in the people to enter history, inspiring the Google team to create a new search tool: Google Images.

“It was an incredible thing. The whole world had the exact same reaction: it remained open-mouthed. Today we live in a high-tech society, but back then it was different. To think that a single dress, tied to a particular moment, has led to the creation of a tool that we now use almost without notice, I think it’s an extraordinary thing “.
- Donatella Versace -

To celebrate its twentieth anniversary, the Jungle print returns to the catwalk in its version original, in shades of green, and in a palette of reds and oranges. Presented in its original version, the print is declined with different materials and techniques. It is found printed on the legendary metal-mesh and embroidered with crystals and tie-dye elements.

Shirts embroidered with the unforgettable print are worn under corsets with a sweetheart neckline. Also, it appears for the first time on Squalo and in sneakers three-dimensional embroidery on the Virtus bag. Volumes, overlays and intricate shapes for the cleavage bring the iconic black dress back to life Versace.

Borrowing the techniques used to create Atelier dresses, the marked lines geometric give character to a series of black dresses that open the show. Silhouettes that sinuous caress the body are combined with golden details and delicate sandals, embellished with leaves of skin.

The shoulders return to the fore and characterize tailored jackets. Balloon skirts with narrow waist they are embroidered with crystals and create a figure at the same time strong, elegant and extremely feminine.

The iconic garments evolve thanks to the use of a special avant-garde tie-dye technique that is used on the leather, creates a marbled effect in fluorescent tones. This technique also blends with the sartorial garments in Prince of Wales, who, together with the T-shirts on which stands the iconic Medusa or the signature of Gianni Versace, they symbolize the encounter between the classical aesthetics of the brand with the desire for continuous experimentation.

The ankle-tied sandals are characterized by plexiglass heels and mini cristal-mesh handbags complete the looks. This season, Versace and Google are working together to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of a moment legendary in the history of fashion and of Google itself.

The meeting of technology, classicism and fashion is evident also in the setting: the domed ceiling inspired by the Pantheon and the central sculpture in the shape of a palm become one with digital art projections.

Thanks to the use of Google Tilt Brush, the print Jungle comes to life in a new virtual form. Always passionate about innovation technology, Donatella Versace will also use the latest digital frontier – the Google Assistant – for look for images of the Jungle dress, thus creating another unforgettable and “googlabile” moment Versace.

VERSACE SPRING SUMMER 2020 MEN’S COLLECTION – MILAN FASHION WEEK

Versace Fashion Show SS 2020 Milan

The Versace Men’s Spring-Summer 2020 collection is a celebration of contemporary masculinity. Iconic house codes, colorful prints, and ironic nuances are combined with new tailoring silhouettes in signature Versace style. The personal journey of a young man, coming of age and finding his confidence, is subtly referenced throughout the collection. Status symbol race cars and intentionally oversized silhouettes evoke the spirit of adolescence. The Versace man is free to self-express with no limitations.

The power suit is revisited through innovative silhouettes, fabrics and playful hardware accents that boast empowering messages. Double-breasted jackets pay homage to the brand’s DNA, with half the garment in solid black contrasting against Prince of Wales fabric. Animalier, laminated textures, and lurex separates juxtapose formalwear, imposing a new energy.

Fringed leather outerwear, motorcycle vests and dark denim are introduced as wardrobe essentials and are layered over new prints. Versace iconography is embraced through a nod to 1990s culture, including inspiration from Prodigy, the British band accredited to the rave moment. Medusa Biggie eyewear is depicted in pop-art motifs and placed on silk shirts and sweatpants. Emblematic Versace fragrances and vintage advertising of the mythological character Narcissus are featured on denim pieces.

The brand’s most recognizable elements are reinterpreted in saturated color. An archive print featuring the Roman god, Bacchus is hand-painted by artist and friend of the House, Andy Dixon. Opulent vases and a race car motif from Dixon’s work have been developed into seasonal patterns and fabrications. Silk shirts, knitwear, and light metallic separates feature the collaboration between Versace and the artist.

For Spring-Summer 2020, Versace menswear takes a sharp turn for the self-assured. Stereotypes of masculine character are challenged through tailoring, fabric and print – an interpretation of confidence through Versace’s maximalist style.

“For this collection, I wanted to explore the elements that empower a man. It’s definitely the confidence, the freedom and desire to express himself without hesitation.”
Donatella Versace

VERSACE FALL WINTER 2019 WOMEN’S COLLECTION – MILAN FASHION WEEK

Versace Fashion Show FW 2019 Milan
Versace Fashion Show FW 2019

The Women’s Fall-Winter 2019 Collection explores the house’s codes through a new lens. The dichotomy of luxury and grunge is present on the runway, where rich fabrics feature unfinished hems and looks are adorned with signature Safety Pins. The collection is a celebration of Versace iconography, while contrasting styling elements, fabric innovation and an ode to photography deliver multi-dimensional impact.

Key runway looks pay tribute to Versace’s storied relationship with fashion photography, featuring portraits of Donatella Versace by Richard Avedon. These images are reprised in the Fall-Winter Collection thanks to the support of the Richard Avedon Foundation. The American photographer lensed more than 30 campaigns for Versace over the course of 20 years, beginning with the Spring-Summer 1980 Collection. For the launch of the fragrance Blonde, Avedon created portraits of Donatella Versace in his studio in New York on February 3rd, 1995.

The Blonde campaign, and in particular, the associated fragrance, lent further inspiration to the collection where new prints and embroideries showcase the house’s most distinctive perfume bottles. The print innovation continues in Versace’s colorful trademark style, mixing bold hues with house codes and references to art history. Monuments come to life in vivid tones on the Vittoria print through a bright representation of a statue from London’s National Gallery. An explosion of color celebrates the essence of Versace. Barocco-style V’s feature on silks, lurex jacquards and on the house’s new handbag line, Virtus. Taking its name from the Roman deity, Virtus symbolizes strength, courage, and character. A bold symbol of the brand’s aesthetic heritage, the central Barocco V characterizes the bag.

The conflicting natures of luxury and grunge are revealed in the styling and details of the collection. Quintessential Versace hardware elements like the Greek Key and newly embellished Safety Pins are at the core of this juxtaposition. Cashmere knits are destroyed while raw-cut edges on colorful tweeds are overlaid with top-stitched silk bondage straps. Stockings are paired with slip dresses, faux furs are worn with the gold chains, and leather boots are dramatized with hardware buckles.

“Bold women feel free to stay away from what is expected. With this collection, I wanted to show that side of a woman that isn’t afraid to step outside of her comfort zone because she knows that imperfection is the new perfection.”

VERSACE FALL WINTER 2019 MEN’S COLLECTION – MILAN FASHION WEEK

The Versace Man Fall-Winter 2019 collection reflects on the modern concept of man and on an idea of masculinity that pushes the boundaries and breaks the rules of menswear by challenging notions and stereotypes.

“In the ‘90s there was such a specific idea of A man but, since then, fashion has evolved dramatically and today one cannot define men in just that same, clear way. Everything has changed, and today’s society allows everyone a greater freedom to express themselves with their clothes as well as with their actions. What I wanted to show in this collection are the different facets of a man, who, like everyone, dresses according to the occasion and has gained the courage that he didn’t have before. If I had to find a word that defines today’s men, it would be daring.”
Donatella Versace

This collection aims to create a conversation about what menswear is today by empowering people to explore and express the various aspects of their character through style choices. Every man is free to tell his own personal story in a society where individuality matters as much as being recognized as part of a group.

Only a confident man is able to see beyond the status quo and challenge it. This newly found attitude gives him the freedom and security to ignore conventional norms around beauty, and even more so, around masculinity.

Sharp tailored suits with safety pin details walk next to see-through plastic pants or bondage-printed silk shirts. Embroidered lace details are placed on knitwear and worn with the most classic Prince-of-Wales pants and the Chain Reaction sneakers. Embroidered boxer-style shorts are worn with button-up dress shirts.

A Limited Edition collaboration with Ford is inspired by the excitement of buying your first car. Excitement and aspiration of owning something as an extension of one’s personality, something very connected to the idea of being a man.

The layered looks and seemingly random clash of elements, colors, jewelry, accessories, prints and shapes give men the possibility and courage to test the extent of masculinity and to tell their own story.
